The Disorder Of Voyeurism
Voyeurism is such a widely used term in modern society that people almost seem to forget that it can carry some very negative connotations and consequences if it gets out of control. The problem is that a certain amount of voyeurism is entirely normal, and it becomes even more normal as media technology advances and anyone with a cell phone can become a news photographer. When that video shows up on CNN or YouTube people are almost compelled to watch. It’s the same with a horrible accident on the highway. If people just drove past without looking there would be very little slowdown in the traffic. However, there’s always a traffic jam because everyone wants to see if there’s any blood on the road and how badly the car has been smashed up. In truth, there’s a voyeur lying dormant within all of us and he tends to come out in certain situations. In most cases this isn’t a problem, but when you start observing people having sex and you lose control you may very well be diagnosed with the medical condition voyeurism.
Voyeurism, when categorized as a medical condition, is a disorder of sexual arousal. It involves the act of observing unsuspecting people, most often strangers, who are naked, in the process of disrobing, or having sex in some occasions. The voyeur will often masturbate during or after his observational activities. Most people have probably engaged in a very mild form of voyeurism by masturbating to an x-rated film in their life. However, it becomes a disorder when for at least six months the voyeur has intense sexual desires or fantasies featuring the act of watching the aforementioned naked or disrobing person. This, combined with an inability to function properly in their daily life (problems at work, social issues, etc) will cause a doctor to formally diagnose voyeurism. I’ll bet you didn’t know that it was actually categorized as a psychological disorder?
The underlying cause of this problem is difficult to pinpoint in most cases, but it is believe that voyeurism disorders being with some sort of sexual trauma or powerful experience in childhood. At the age the brain is still being wired for proper functioning in adulthood and if you tinker with it in a bad way you can cause disaster. The only successful treatment is to spend significant amounts of time in therapy, both individual and group if you can manage. Treatment is not always successful, but it is the only hope for someone who is endangering their livelihood through voyeurism.
Luckily, most people contain their voyeurism to normal practices like the occasional masturbation session to pornography or a glance at the evening news to see what tragedy has befallen the poor souls in your town. If it ever gets beyond that make sure you nip it in the bud before you find yourself saddled with a life of sessions on a therapists couch. This type of disorder can be controlled and quelled if you get to it early enough so put in the effort if you sense it coming.
